Manifesto

Young architects lack opportunities to build, be seen, and shape their careers. At the same time, communities and small businesses are shut out from design expertise that could help them thrive.

Without changing we will lose the talent, ideas, and energy that emerging practices bring. Architecture becomes narrower, less relevant, and less accessible.

Another future is possible where new voices shape the built world—where architecture is open, diverse, and deeply connected to community. A culture where experimentation is possible, and design is for everyone.

Quick ideas, real projects, fresh talent.

Community Competitions is an open call platform for local design and community-led architecture across the UK.

We invite creatives to reimagine public spaces through small, design-focused competitions. Each brief responds to local needs and encourages bold, inclusive ideas.

The platform connects architects, designers and communities to bring visibility to overlooked sites, support young emerging talent, and improve everyday spaces through thoughtful, inspiring design.

Competition 01

PORTOBELLO PROMENADE

A new community-led competition is calling for bold and imaginative proposals to reinvent a neglected site along Portobello’s Promenade just outside Edinburgh. At present there is a block of existing toilets which have been the subject of growing local frustration in recent years, as they are frequently locked and under-maintained. This has prompted the community to take action with the aim to transform the site into a vibrant new stop along the much-loved seaside boardwalk.

Deadline: 8th September 2025
